It started with Stereo…
A quick and informative history lesson:
- “Stereo” was created back in 1881 when Clément Ader demonstrated the first two-channel audio system at the Paris Electrical Exhibition.
- In the 1930s, Harvey Fletcher of Bell Laboratories investigated techniques for stereophonic recording and reproduction.
- But it wasn’t until 1958 that the first stereo records were issued by Audio Fidelity.
- In 1971, quadraphonic sound was introduced with four separate channels.
- Then in the ‘90s, surround sound was initially introduced in theaters, then ultimately, for home use.

Surround Sound – going to new heights…
Surround sound refers to the different audio channels "surrounding" the audience, whether it’s in a theatre or at home.
-
The most common system today is 7.1 Channel Surround.
Here’s how that breaks down:
- Two channels for speakers at the front - left (LF) and right (RF).
- One channel for a speaker at the center (C).
- Two channels for surround speakers at the sides - side left (L) and side right (R).
- Two channels for surround speakers at the rear - surround left (LS) and surround right (RS).
- One low-frequency effects channel (LFE).
Now the next challenge – where do you position these speakers for optimum response? That’s where RadioActive comes in – when we come to your home, we will look at your home and then discuss the solutions that are available. |
